About me

About me

Record labels and bands: Need help with your album artwork?

Need help with your album artwork, for your records or CDs? Complete graphic design? Or perhaps you have the cover idea more or less sorted, and just need someone to lay out the rest of the packaging? Or maybe you’ve taken care of that, but need help preparing the print files.

I’m Paul Jackson (one of many 😬, yet unique 😀 😎), a British designer and artworker based in Essen, Germany. My specialism is the music industry, meaning I help musicians, bands and labels with the design and production of high quality artwork for their records, CDs and downloads. Not only do these look perfect, but they also print perfectly! (I don’t mean the downloads, obviously!)

Album artwork design, layout, reissues and repurposing by Paul Jackson

If you, your band or label requires any of the following, I have the creative skills, technical knowledge and experience to assist you with:

  • Quality album cover artwork and layout for your record or CD
  • Album and CD layout for your release’s packaging, based on your own front cover design or other ideas
  • Creation of press-ready artwork for your records or CDs, which is set up accurately, preventing problems with the printer rejecting the files for technical reasons
  • Troubleshooting of your existing record and CD artwork, to ensure that it’s technically sound and is ready for press, without being rejected by the printers
  • Repurposing artwork for vinyl and CD reissues
  • Album typesetting – perhaps you’re planning a box set, expanded edition or deluxe reissue programme?
  • Proofreading (British English) of the texts for your record or CD liner notes
  • Other related services

Peace of mind that your album artwork files will print perfectly!

Musicians, labels and manufacturing brokers who work with me enjoy the peace of mind that comes with knowing that the artwork files I produce (whether I designed them, or just finished or inspected and corrected them) can be sent off to the printer without problems occurring. This means they don’t have to deal with album artwork problems – queries and rejected files from the pressing plant – leaving them time to concentrate on their music, promotion or other clients.

So, labels and brokers, if you’re fed up of receiving emails about missing bleeds or oversaturated inks and then having to chase up the designer, who is most likely busy with her day job or is backpacking through Asia or something, I may be just the person you are looking for.

The same applies to bands who have just been given a bundle of Illustrator® EPS files, told to use these templates to create their record or CD artwork and don’t have a clue what to do with them.

Album artwork customers past and present

Throughout my long self-employment I have mostly worked with a small number of loyal, repeat customers at any one time. A couple of them have even been with me since the very beginning!

I’ve been lucky to work with some really talented people over the course of my self-employed career, including some whose music I’d always loved. (They say you shouldn’t work with your heroes, but I did! At least, with some of them.) It’s always a joy to hear that their delivery of records or CDs has just arrived, and that they look great – just as they expected them to look! If you too would like to experience this warm glow upon opening boxes of your own releases, maybe we could work together. Please contact me with your requirements.

Some of these close and/or long-lasting partnerships are/have been with: Current 93/David Tibet and all his/their many related projects • Southern Studios LtdTrisol Music Group GmbHUpset The Rhythm • World Serpent Distribution Ltd ⚰️ and various manufacturing brokers, meaning I’ve worked with a wide range of artists and labels over the last 20 years – some well known, some not so, and some so obscure their own partners and mothers are barely aware they existed.

Album cover design and layout by a music industry specialist

It’s a source of never-ending delight to me that I can get paid for doing something I love, from the comfort of my own home and with no boss telling me what to do, and with music blasting out as I work 🎵 🎶 🔨 🔨 🔨!

As perceptive readers may have gathered, I’m a music lover myself, and so own a fair few records and CDs 😎. I even dabble in music myself. I’m therefore intimately acquainted with the various types of packaging options available, and which ones are suited to particular jobs. It’s therefore only natural that I specialise in this area with my design and graphics work. Spending my time designing reports full of graphs for investment banks would barely be an improvement on putting on a suit 😳, travelling to some office somewhere 😬 and pushing columns of figures 📊 📈 about in spreadsheets all day 😣.

“Eh? It seems as if you’re apparently a translator or something? 🤔

Why on earth should I engage a German to English translator to take care of graphic design, layout, typesetting and print file troubleshooting for my album artwork? I wouldn’t hire my dentist to design an extension to my house or my accountant to cut my hair! What’s going on?”

Yes, that’s right. My background is actually in the graphics sector, but as a result of changes in the music industry, since 2013 I’ve predominantly been working as a translator. And in turn, because of changes in that industry too, I’m currently positioning myself back in the graphics sector a bit more.

So you can rest assured that if you entrust your music industry graphics projects to me, they’ll be in good hands, as I’ve been doing this sort of work for a long, long time! Otherwise, so many musicians and labels would never have engaged me to work on their numerous record and CD artwork projects!
