Album artwork repurposing and reissues

Artwork for vinyl and CD reissues

Do you run a record label? Or perhaps you’re in charge of a label’s production department? Maybe you never got around to CD reissues of your early vinyl-only releases, or perhaps hordes of people have been emailing you and messaging you on Twitter clamouring for vinyl reissues of some of your better-known titles from the 1990s or 2000s? You’ll need some artwork for these vinyl and CD reissues.

So you decide to rummage about in your attic, erm… company archives to see what you can find. You unearth the masters OK, and find some of the artwork files spread across a selection of quaint, obsolete media: DVDs… CDs… Or maybe even Zip discs or Syquest cartridges 😳.

You’re not sure if everything needed is there, but scribbled on the disc’s packaging is an email address for the person who designed and put together the artwork all those years ago.

By now, you’re super-motivated to get these reissues released. You’re visualising potential packaging options, and imagining how much you could earn from these album reissues, even as you fire off an email to the Compuserve address on the disc.

Two seconds later, you receive a reply, although not the one you were hoping for. “550 Requested action not taken: mailbox unavailable: The email address does not exist on this server. Check the address for typing errors.”

After all these years, I suppose it’s inevitable that the original designer threw in the towel and went to find (and lose) themselves in Goa, or set up an alpaca farm in the countryside.

Need artwork generating for your vinyl and CD reissues?

This is where you need an artworker with many years’ experience of vinyl and CD reissues, converting existing artwork to use for new editions, and for (re)creating artwork for record and CD reissues based on original source material.

Over the years, I’ve helped bring old records and CDs back to life for artists such as cult underground figures Current 93 and Nurse With Wound, and have also worked on large-scale reissue programmes of material from pioneering punks such as CrassSubhumans and Rudimentary Peni. I’ve also played a part in ensuring that labels in North America save enormous courier costs by having their releases pressed in Europe for the European market, and similarly for European labels who also want to do the same in North America.

See my about me page for more information.

Here’s how I help record labels with artwork for their vinyl and CD reissues:

  • Vinyl reissues of old CDs
  • CD reissues of old vinyl
  • Expanded reissues
  • Special collector’s editions
  • Change to different type of packaging
  • North American pressings to European pressings or European pressings to North American pressings
  • Can work with not only computer files, but also original source materials etc
  • And similar services

Here are some of the ways I can help you with your reissue projects:

  • Design/layout planning: How would the packaging of this vinyl record best translate to the kind of CD packaging you have in mind? (Or of course, the other way round!)
  • How many booklet pages and packaging panels do we have at our disposal? How can they best be utilised so that the design remains true to the original, while at the same time harnessing the opportunities that the new format/packaging offers?
  • Use old computer files to create new computer files! This includes older software versions, and in some cases also old software!
  • Scanning, retouching and optimising images from source material – original photos, paintings, drawings, camera-ready artwork, film – or archive copies of the record or CD itself (usually the last resort!)
  • Creation of vector files for band and label logos etc
  • Typeface identification and sourcing followed by typesetting
  • Proofreading and editing text (British English only), as it’s sometimes the case that even the most talented musicians don’t know their apostrophes from their elbow
